In the North-East: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Veneto make up this region.
See our Page on Recommended Hotels in Venice, Italy.
Liguria has a temperate climate which has resulted in this area being called the "Italian Riviera". It's an area that is popular with expatriates and locals alike and during the summer they flock to the beaches and enjoy the warmth of the summer sun.
Piedmont is a well-known region of fine wines. Others may be surprised to learn that it is also a region which produces large amounts of rice which is grown in the Po Valley. This is an area of gastronomic delight, for not only does it produce fine wines, but it also produces fine truffles and has very distinct regional foods.
And it is not just good for food and wine, but the scenery is stunning too. Castles and fortresses cling to the sides of the undulating mountains that dip down to crystal clear lakes. This is an area that beckons people of all ages and suits both those who seek adventure, and those who just want to meander and savour the local fare.
Northern Italy of course is home to the Dolomites and the Alps. This is snow country in the winter that brings hordes of winter sport worshipers; skiers, snowboarders and toboggonists.
There are so many important towns in the North of Italy; Turin, Genoa, Padua, Verona and Venice, just to name a few. But undoubtedly, it is Venice that gets the most tourists, year round, as they flock to the Grand Canal and take photographs from the Rialto Bridge, or in St. Mark's Square
The sinking city has stopped sinking, and these days the canals are relatively clean. They are a hive of activity with gondolas ferrying tourists, water taxis ferrying the more well-heeled Venetians, and service boats such as the vaporettas who ply the larger canals picking up passengers, boats that pick up the city's rubbish, those that are ambulances for the sick, and barges bringing supplies to the shops.
It is a beautiful city which can be visited all year around. It's a city to admire and one to get lost in. When you go to Venice get off the well-worn tourist track and see the true Venice.
