When you travel to Italy you really need to have a plan, otherwise you miss out on so much. I remember the time I went on an unexpected trip to Spain via France and we kept on passing signs for Carcassonne. I didn't know about Carcassonne then, and so we went happily past it. 

It was only on my return that there was a travelogue the very next week on Carcassonne and I just about wept! We had missed such a spectacular fortified town through sheer ignorance! Some 12 years later, I will be able to finally see Carcassonne this summer, however, just think! If I had listened to a travel podcast or two, and read a few more guide books I may well have been more informed!
