Cheap Family Skiing in Southern Italy at Laceno
by The Travel Italy Grapevine Team
Some many years ago we ended up staying at Laceno. It is a small village tucked up high in the mountains not far from Bagnoli Irpino, and Avellino. We ended up staying there because we wanted somewhere that would be close enough to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and other tourist attractions in Italy but wouldn't cost us a lot of money, as in those days we were still travelling with the children.
Laceno is a quiet place to stay in summer, but in winter it becomes a skier's paradise, especially for those skiers who live in Southern Italy as it has good skiing right on their doorstep. Who needs to go to the northern Alps and the more expensive resorts in the Dolomites?
Admittedly, it is not your top ski resort, one can hardly call it a resort at all. However, the small village of Laceno has a wonderful four star hotel called the Grand Hotel Grisone, which at the time when we were there, served the most abundant and delicious meals and offered comfortable rooms at ridiculously reasonable rates.
And some 8 years later, their rates are still cheap, especially as it includes full board. It is the ideal place to take the kids for a cheap family skiing trip in Italy. Where else can you stay in a 4 star hotel with full board, with the ski lifts right outside your front door for Euros 65-95 per day? Having stayed at this hotel, we can personally recommend it.
The snow fields offer just 5 ski lifts; 2 chair lifts, and 3 surface lifts, with 13 pistes. This is a place is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for beginners and advanced skiers, so there is something here to suit all levels of ability. They also have some cross-country ski trails too.
