The Best Time to Visit Northern Italy NEW

Hi JJ

To tell you the best time to visit Northern Italy without knowing more about your trip is rather difficult.

You didn't say exactly where you were hoping to visit in Northern Italy, which consists of various states. Nor do you say what your aim is when visiting this area. If you were looking to go skiing, then obviously the winter months would be best.

If you are going to Valle d'Aosta the best times to visit are May-June and September-October, therefore missing the busy periods of July and August when scores of tourists descend due to school holidays and the attraction for walkers is high during this time. If you are wanting to go skiing, the higher mountain resorts offer skiing all year round, and all ski resorts are crowded during the peak-winter months, especially January and February.

If you are visiting Lombardia it is best visited during spring and autumn. In summer; July and August particularly, the climate is very hot, while in winter it tends to be cold, wet and foggy.

In Vento the region has lots of rain during spring and autumn. Winter temperatures in the area vary and in some areas like Arabba you can find snow 150 days of the year. In Venice you can also hit the acqua alta in winter when many areas of the city are flooded for a couple of days, and there can also fog about.

If you are looking for a time when accommodation and things in general are cheaper than go in the winter. However, there is a reason for this. November, December and January are low tourist seasons due to the cooler temperatures and the rainy season in many areas.

So without knowing exactly where you are going, I would suggest that the best time to visit Northern Italy would be in spring; March, April and May. This is the time for spring flowers and better weather with less rain, and warmer temperatures. You can still find cheap deals at this time of year, and the days are longer than the 3 months prior to spring, so that means more daylight hours for sightseeing. You also avoid the throngs of tourists who descend during July and August and so have the top tourists sites almost to yourself.
