Speaking Italian is appreciated, even if you struggle to speak and murder the language in your poor pronunciation. This is because, out of the major cities, you will find very few people who can speak English well. The further south you go of Rome, the more Italian you will have to learn to speak.
So we have some basic Italian phrases that cover most aspects of everyday Italian and situations that you will find yourself in. If you want to speak fluent Italian, we suggest you attend some courses before you travel to Italy.
Basic Italian Pronunciation for your Italian Phrases and Words
Vowels
a is broad, like a in father: casa
e has 2 sounds; closed like ey in they: sera, open like e in egg: settei is like ee in feet: vinereo has 2 sounds; closed like o in show: croma, open like o in dog: boccau is like oo in moon: luna
* When two or more vowels come together each vowel is pronounced separately: buona, baia
b, d, f, l, m, n, p, t, v are pronounced as we do in English. When these are double, the are pronounced as individual sounds: bello
c before a, o or u, and before consonants is like k in king: cane. Before e or i it is like ch in church: cena
ch is also like k in king: chiesa
g before a, o, or u is hard like g in got: gufo, before e or i it is like j in jelly: gentile
gh is like g in gun: ghiaccio
gl when followed by a, e, o, and u is like gl in glass: gloria
gli is like lli in million: figlio
gn is like ni in onion:bagno
h is silent
ng is like ng in finger:ringraziare
r is pronounced distinctly
s between 2 vowels is like s in rose: riso, at the beginning of a word it is like s in soap: sapone
sc before e or i is like sh in shell: scienza
z sounds like ts within a word: fazione and dz at the beginning: zoo.

Basic Cultural Tip for Travel in Italy: Italians are not big tea drinkers and if they ever do have tea, they have it with lemon, rather than milk. So if you want milk in your tea, ask for some cold milk - "Un po di'latte freddo, per favore."
They also drink much of their coffee without milk unless you ask for American coffee. If you want strong, coffee with milk, ask for "Il caffe machiato", which is an espresso with a little milk.
